Save the Children adorns Connecticut Headquarters with California Flag Art

Westport, CT. Save the Children’s Connecticut headquarters has recently unfurled a new flag.  In fact, a small piece of the Pacific Ocean is now perched alongside the Saugatuck River. Purchased by a Board of Trustees member, PACIFIC REPUBLIC is an original work by Los Angeles–based artist Jillian Kogan.

The unique banner is formed completely of seashells, sand, and a hodgepodge of sea life. Kogan works exclusively with the California State flag manipulating its form with everything from fabric to currency to Bolivian coffee beans. After donating a piece to Heal the Bay, she was inspired by the organization to create a flag art made completely from ocean life.  "The whole time I was creating the piece I envisioned it in a Malibu home or up in Santa Barbara." said Kogan, adding,  "I was surprised and thrilled when the gallery informed me it would be making its home in Connecticut.”  As a longtime supporter and sponsor of Save the Children, Kogan felt the organization’s headquarters was a truly inspired destination for her work.

The history of Save the Children is a story of positive change and people - millions of people in thousands of communities around the globe - working together to create opportunities for the world's children to live safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

In January 1932, in a small room in New York City, a group of concerned citizens gathered to respond to the needs of the proud people of Appalachia hard hit by the Great Depression. From this early effort in the hills and hollows of Harlan County, Kentucky, grew a self-help philosophy and practice still at work today in more than 45 countries: providing communities with a hand up, not a handout.

This approach - working with families to define and solve the problems their children and communities face and utilizing a broad array of strategies to ensure self-sufficiency - is the cornerstone of all Save the Children's programs.
